How to make tortillas from scratch and step up your taco Tuesday game!

Reason one of why you should make your own tortillas

If your favorite food is tacos, MAKE tortillas. They will seriously change your at home taco making game. You will not want to revert to store bought ever again.

Reason two

If you think you have no talent in the kitchen but want to start somewhere, make your own tortillas and you will feel like a BADASS. (or this simple bread recipe linked here)

Reason three

If reason one or two sparked some little fire in your heart but your still making excuses on why not to, just do it! You will not fail. This recipe is fool proof.

What you’ll need

A rolling pin

An electric mixer (or if you’re old-school like me and enjoy being hands on, a mixing bowl and your bare hands)

2 cups flour

3 tbsp Crisco OR 5 tbsp butter (if using salted butter opt out the tsp of salt)

1 tsp kosher salt

½ cup cold water

NOW

Toss your crisco/butter and flour into a mixing bowl and mix or knead together until the two ingredients combine to a crumble

Add in remaining ingredients and mix on medium speed for 3 minutes and increase to medium- high speed for 5 more minutes. If you increase the speed too quickly, you WILL have buttery flour chunks flying out of your bowl and ransacking your kitchen.

While things are coming together in the mixer, lightly douse a pan with your oil of choice that is close in size to your desired tortilla size. Turn the stove to medium heat so it can warm up before using.

A key to your success here is ^

Without heating the pan beforehand, the tortilla will come out chewy!

Now that the dough is soft and pliable, separate it into 8 to 10 equal-ish sized balls. Roll each one into a cute lil circle in the palm of your hand.

One by one, press the ball flat on a floured surface. Use a rolling pin (or whatever you have on hand like the side of a bowl) to stretch the dough out to about 3 times the starting size.

TIP: alternate directions you roll from center frequently to ensure it keeps a circular shape.

Once you have your tortillas prepared and the pan is lightly steaming, it is time to get to cooking.

Place one tortilla on pan, leaving it untouched until bubbles start to form on the surface. Now flip the tortilla with a large spatula. On this side you will frequently rotate the tortilla to prevent burning and allowing for it to evenly cook.

After a minute or so, remove from pan and wrap in a kitchen towel to store until serving.

That’s it! May not sound easy.. but trust me and give it a try.
